| Steve Lewis - Djembe, conga, miscellaneous percussion. Like most American drummers, I started out playing snare drum in the grade school band. When I was about 12, I got a drum kit; then I just sort of fooled around on the kit through high school and college. Though as I look back, I always liked playing on the toms (a taste for melodic drumming, maybe a frustrated tonal musician at heart, or an early hint of the West African groove to come). After college, I fell out of drumming for awhile. I dabbled in stand up comedy, thought about film school, and eventually landed in law school. I am now a trial attorney at the the Public Defenders Office. Then one day I was in a music store with Marilyn (she's now the singer with the band). She was shopping for microphones or lights or keyboards or something. I wandered off into the drum section and started drumming again. I started back just fooling around on the kit. Later, I started taking West African percussion classes at the local community college and discovered djembes, dunus, congas, and hunger for drumming. |
